The Gas Content in Galactic Disks: Correlation with Kinematics

چکیده

We consider the relationship between the total HI mass in late-type galaxies and the kinematic properties of their disks. The mass MHI for galaxies with a wide variety of properties, from dwarf dIrr galaxies with active star formation to giant low-brightness galaxies, is shown to correlate with the product VcR0 (Vc is the rotational velocity, and R0 is the radial photometric disks scale length), which characterizes the specific angular momentum of the disk. This relationship, along with the anticorrelation between the relative mass of HI in a galaxy and Vc, can be explained in terms of the previously made assumption that the gas density in the disks of most galaxies is maintained at a level close to the threshold (marginal) stability of a gaseous layer to local gravitational perturbations. In this case, the regulation mechanism of the star formation rate associated with the growth of local gravitational instability in the gaseous layer must play a crucial role in the evolution of the gas content in the galactic disk.

Formation and evolution of galactic spheroids by mergers

Galactic spheroids can form as a result of galaxy interactions and mergers of disks. Detailed analyses of the photometric properties, the intrinsic orbital structure, the line-of-sight velocity distributions and the kinemetry of simulated merger remnants, which depend critically on the geometry and the gas content of the interacting progenitors, indicate that low and intermediate mass rotating ...

Co Detection and Millimeter Continuum Emission from Low Surface Brightness Galaxies

We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1–0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selecte...

Counterrotating Nuclear Disks in Arp 220

The ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 has been observed at resolution in CO (2È1) and 1 mm 0A.5 continuum using the newly expanded Owens Valley Millimeter Array. The CO and continuum peaks at the double nuclei and the surrounding molecular gas disk are clearly resolved. We Ðnd steep velocity gradients across each nucleus (*V D 500 km s~1 within whose directions are not aligned with r \ 0A.3...

Molecular Gas in Elliptical Galaxies: Distribution and Kinematics

I present interferometric images (∼7 resolution) of CO emission in five elliptical galaxies and nondetections in two others. These data double the number of elliptical galaxies whose CO emission has been fully mapped. The sample galaxies have 10 to 5×10 M⊙ of molecular gas distributed in mostly symmetric rotating disks with diameters of 2 to 12 kpc. Four out of the five molecular disks show rem...

Probing the nature of the ISM in Active Galactic Nuclei through H absorption

The physical and kinematical conditions of the gas surrounding an active galactic nucleus (AGN) offer key diagnostics for understanding the processes occurring in the inner few kpc around the nucleus. Neutral hydrogen can give important insights on these regions. Apart from probing the presence of gas in relatively settled conditions (i.e. circumnuclear disks/tori) it can also trace the presenc...
